Esperanza Spalding beat out Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine, Drake, and Mumford & Sons as best new artist at Sunday's Grammy Awards.
1. She's the first jazz winner of the best new artist award.
2. She's 26 years old and from Portland, Oregon. She's a classically training jazz/chamber music fusion musician and singer. She taught herself to play violin at age 5, and joined the Chamber Music Society of Oregon shortly after.

3. She's technically released eight albums, if you include those by her teenage band and collaborations with other jazz musicians. Chamber Music Society dropped in 2010.
4. Her solo album debut was in 2006: Junjo.

5. She attended the Berklee Academy of Music. When she graduated at 20, she became a professor there.
6. She was selected by President Barack Obama to perform at the Oslo City Hall when he accepted his 2009 Nobel Prize. She also performed at a White House poetry jam.
