This A.R. Rahman Effort for
Slumdog Milionaire
so the movie can win the Oscarit was very big pleasure to see
A.R. Rahman triumph
at the Oscars this year with a win forBest Music Score on Slumdog Milionaire
and Best Music Song for Jai Ho. Listen to Jai Ho here. Perhaps A.R. Rahman's win at the Oscars will bring more attention to his music and Indian music in general. I'd love to see more variety in the American mainstream and indie music scenes. A.R. Rahman's work is a genius combination of Indian and western musical influences.Only time will tell. And for those that missed A.R. Rahman's Oscar speech, here it is again:
It's the last big awards shindig of the year, so we've enlisted (er, forced) Mindy Monez and Zach Oat to do their liveblog thing once again. Zach's starting things off for the first hour...
8:30 -- Hugh Jackman points out that playing a different nationality is pure Oscar gold,, which is why he didn't get nominated for Australia. Yeah, that's the reason, Hugh.
8:39 -- For mentioning the crime of overlooking Dark Knight in his song about the Best Picture nominees, Hugh Jackman is my hero. For ending the song by singing, "I'm Wolverine!" he is my God.
8:43 -- This supporting-actress welcoming committee thing is weird. It feels like the opening scene from Superman. "Guilty! Guilty!" It also feels like the "five-timers club" from Saturday Night Live, where Steve Martin and Paul Simon welcome Tom Hanks and give him a robe.
8:48 -- I could listen to Penelope Cruz talk forever, laughing the entire time. I just love that accent. Awww. She's crying.
8:53 -- I don't know why, but putting Tina Fey and Steve Martin on stage together, not only ends any Tina Fey backlash I've been feeling for the past few weeks, but also the Steve Martin backlash I've been feeling for years. It may be because this is a really funny bit.
8:55 -- I love this new format for presenting the Best Screenplay nominees! The script read over footage from the film? Brilliant. They should do this every year. I doubt they will. Dustin Lance Black wins for Milk. Moving speech.
8:59 -- "Don't fall in love with me!" Oh, Steve. The shtick is getting old. Now on to Best Adapted Screenplay, the bastard half-brother of Best Screenplay. Same awesome format. I think once again about how I haven't seen these films. Simon Beaufoy wins for Slumdog. Who'da thunk it?
9:02 -- Jack Black makes a joke that will probably cost him work. When asked about his voiceover career strategy, he says he does a Dreamworks animated movie every year, and then bets on Pixar to win the Oscar. Jeffrey Katzenberg laughs, but co-presenter Jennifer Aniston apologizes anyway. I think this is the first time The Iron Giant has been mentioned at an Academy Awards ceremony. A shame. An awesome film, and not just for the Jennifer Aniston voice acting. (Surprisingly, it's for the Vin Diesel voice acting.)
